I mean, seriously, what's to LIKE about this play? It's about a man who fails as a salesman because he relies on being liked, rather than on being good at death of a salesman, and death of a salesman fails as a father because he taught his sons to value being likable and handsome instead of talented, hardworking or ambitious, and who finally decides that he's worth more dead than alive, because at least if he kills himself and makes it look like an accident, his wife and kids will get the insurance money.

Willy then goes to the office of his neighbor Charley, where he runs into Charley's son Bernard now a successful death of a salesman ; Bernard tells him that Biff originally wanted to do well in summer schoolbut something happened in Boston when Biff went to visit his father that changed his mind.


Charley gives the now-unemployed Willy money to pay his life-insurance premium; Willy shocks Charley by remarking that ultimately, a man is "worth more dead than alive.

Happy tries to get Biff to lie to their father. Biff tries to tell him what happened as Willy gets angry and slips death of a salesman a flashback of what happened in Boston the day Biff came to see him.

Willy had been having an affair with a receptionist on one of his sales trips when Biff unexpectedly arrived at Willy's hotel room. A shocked Biff angrily confronted his father, calling him a liar and a fraud.

Willy thinks Biff is being wish-washy to spite him. Later that night, Willy starts having flashbacks and talking to imagined images as if death of a salesman were real people.

The brothers are death of a salesman worried, as they have never seen their father like this. Biff, feeling as though he should stay close to home and fix his relationship with his dad, decides to talk to a former employer, Bill Oliver, about getting a loan to start a business.


Linda admits to her sons that she and Willy are struggling financially. As the play progresses, Willy's life becomes more disordered, and death of a salesman is forced to withdraw almost completely to the past, where order exists because he can reconstruct events or relive old memories.
